Moving into a care home for a period of nursing care is a big step for anyone, especially if they're living with dementia. What is the home like?

A truly wonderful place combining the best of the traditional local stone built style with the modern convenience and facilities of a purpose built nursing home.

Location & Surrounds

Situated in a quiet leafy residential area on the outskirts of the charming village of Steeton, the home is a short drive away from Keighley and just 1/4 mile from Airedale General Hospital.

Transport links are good with easy access to the local road network and bus and train stations nearby.

The home is set in its own extensive 3-4 acre grounds and is surrounded by woodland making it very private, peaceful, safe, and an ideal place for nursing care. Should you wish to take your loved one out for a trip when you visit, there are plenty of local attractions and the magnificent splendour of the Yorkshire Dales is just a short 10mile drive away.

Inside & Accomodation

Although contained in one main building with 63 bedrooms, Steeton Court comprises four community areas named after our famous local Bronte family. Many larger purpose-built care homes are one unit where the large size makes them seem rather anonymous, corporate and unfriendly. Our four areas create a genuine, friendly, small community feel that everyone feels a part of. This ensures your loved one will quickly settle in and get to know their fellow residents, while our staff can really get to know them and their needs well and give them truly personal attention. This is especially important for those living with dementia.

The Heathcliffe Memory Lane Community is a secure 17 bedroom ground floor unit providing specialist nursing care for those living with dementia. Entry and exit are by keypad only. The facilities here have been extensively and comprehensively adapted in line with the recommendations from Stirling University's world-renowned dementia department so that life for your loved one will be as easy and stress free as possible. The decor is calming and neutral, the cutlery and dining furniture is high contrast to make it's use clear, and the bedroom wardrobes and chest of drawers are specialist units that allow their contents to be previewed to aid garment selection and avoid confusion.

The Heathcliffe community has its own dining area to maintain the community feel as well as its own quiet lounge. Here your loved one can meet up with friends for a chat or enjoy some peaceful solitude as the mood takes them.

The community is equipped with its own kitchenette where your loved one can make themselves a drink and a snack, and these are favourite places for families when they come to visit. Keeping in touch is easy as there is Wi-fi throughout the home with the facility to do skype or zoom calls, which we will of course organise and assist with.

Steeton Court always has lots of activities and events going on that your loved one can take part in if they wish to and are able. These take place in the extra-large main lounge in the Branwell community area.

Is there a garden?

Yes! In fact, your loved one will be surrounded by beautiful and extensive gardens for them to enjoy.

The home is bordered by mature woodland with a delightful stream at the rear. If your loved one likes wildlife they will be in for a treat. The woodland is home to many species of birds and animals, including deer who frequently wander in to the garden and are a delight to behold and guaranteed to raise the spirits.

The home has a choice of three conservatories so your loved one can sit and enjoy the view of the garden whatever the weather and time of year. In the spring and summer months, they can take a walk on the immaculately tended lawns surrounding the home and by the well-established flower beds bursting with a riot of cheerful coloured plants.

There are several patio areas where they'll be able to sit and take tea and cakes with new found friends, bask in the sunshine, or just enjoy some quiet time reading a book outdoors.

What will their room be like?

Being a purpose-designed nursing home, all the rooms at Steeton Court are spacious, comfortable, light, airy, and equipped with everything your loved one will need for daily life. They'll have their own private en-suite and a lovely comfortable bed to ensure a good nights sleep.

All rooms look out over the gardens and many the surrounding woodlands, so the views are wonderfully uplifting and constantly changing with the seasons.

This is your loved one's home so we'd love them to bring their own ornaments, treasured mementos and small furniture items to make their room feel comfortably familiar. We'll even decorate it in line with their personal taste to truly make it feel like home if they'd like.

How will they spend their day?

There's never a dull moment at Steeton court!

If your loved one likes getting involved there are many activities, visiting entertainers, games and parties for them to enjoy. We have two full-time Activities Co-ordinators and all activities are tailored to suit individual capabilities and tastes. So, from exercise classes to live music performances, group games to walks in our lovely grounds, there's sure to be something that suits them perfectly.

How do I know my loved one will be well looked after?

Honestly, one of the most difficult things you'll encounter when looking for a suitable care home for your loved one is judging how good the care they provide is. Of course, everyone says they provide excellent care, but how do you really know they do?

Here are a few very good indicators that we recommend you check for each care home you're interested in. Firstly check out the home's Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating.

Every care home in the country is rated by this government regulatory body as falling into one of four categories: Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate. We're delighted to say Steeton Court has been rated Good by the CQC so you can be assured of the quality of your loved ones care. Click here to read the full report.

Another place to assess a care home is  www.carehome.co.uk. This is the largest website in the UK listing care homes and here residents and families (the people who really know how good the level of care is at a home) can leave a review and rate a home's performance in 12 different areas. All reviews are verified to ensure they are genuine. We're happy to say Steeton Court again scores very highly and you can read all the reviews by clicking here or on our home page

Finally, check out a care home's blog and Facebook page. Here you should see lots of pictures and videos of the activities and events taking place at the home and this is also a great way for you to keep in touch and get involved with what's happening at the home. You can check out our blog by clicking here and our Facebook page here. Why not Like the Facebook page while you're there and leave a comment? We'd love to hear from you.

Will they enjoy the food?

Definitely, if they like tasty, home-cooked cuisine.

Our two full-time dedicated chefs prepare a variety of delicious and nutritious meals that will have your loved one eagerly anticipating every meal time. Ingredients are sourced locally, freshly prepared daily, and served in the community's own dining room. This is the beating heart of the home and everyone looks forward to both the food and the chance to have a natter and a catch up with friends and staff members.

Menus are created with input from residents and families, are seasonal and changed once a quarter. Two hot choices and salad main meal are served at lunch times along with vegetarian and lighter options and supper.

If your loved one has special dietary requirements we'll make sure they're accommodated and there are always alternatives if ever they don't like something that's on the day's menu. Similarly, although the catering team take great care to ensure everything is fresh, your loved one can have whatever they want (so don't worry about that special hankering for Angel Delight or Heinz Cream of Tomato, it's no problem!).

In the warmer months your loved one can join many of our residents who take tea and cakes out on to the patio areas to enjoy the sunshine, the view and a chat with friends.

Who will be looking after them?

We have a loyal and long-serving staff that we believe to be the best nursing team in the area.

Your loved one needs to know like and trust our staff members completely if they are to feel comfortable in letting them care for them - and so do we. That's why we employ nice people. We don’t employ people to be nice.

We have stringent, in-depth recruitment procedures to ensure that only the most caring and understanding of individuals get to care for your loved one.

They are selected not because they want a job, rather because caring for people is their vocation. Qualifications and experience obviously matter too, so to ensure our very high standards these are also a crucial factor in deciding who joins our team.

This all means you can rest assured that your loved one will be looked after by a highly-skilled, highly trained, expert team. More importantly perhaps is that they'll become trusted friends and companions that your loved one will be comfortable with when dealing with the more sensitive aspects of personal care.
